Bipolar transistor
-Transistor is short for transfer resistor a term which provides something of a clue as to how the device operates; the current flowing in the output circuit is determined by the current flowing in the input circuit. Since transistor are three-terminal devices, one electrode must remain common fall into main categories (bipolar and field-effect) and are also classified according to the semiconductor material employed ( Silicon or germanium) and to their of application (e.q. general purpose, switching, high-frequency, etc). Various classes of transistor are available according to the application concerned.
Transistor operation
Bipolar transistors generally comprise NPN or PNP junctions of either Silicon(SI) or Germanium(Ge) material. Bipolar transistors are on of the main "building block" in electronic system and are used in both analog and digital applications. The devices incorporate two PN junctions and also known as bipolar junction transistors (BJT). It is common to refer to bipolar transistors simply as ;transistors' - the being used to identify field-effect transistors. Bipolar transistors get ther name from the fact that current is carried by both polarities of charge carriers (that is by electrons and by holes), unlike FET, which are unipolar. Bipolar transistors generally have a higher gain than FETs, can often supply more current. However, they have a lower input resistance than FET, are more complicated in operation and often consume more power.
